Yes, I have actually moved 17 times - and that’s just in my adult life. I guess when you’re born an Army brat, you get used to moving, and you just keep doing it.
Anyway, here are some of the things I have learned.
1. Life is full of changes - get used to it.
Even if you never move, things change in life. Nothing stays the same. At least when you move a lot, you start to embrace change, even look forward to it. At the very least, you will get used to change.
2. Every place has its good points.
Sometimes I have moved to places I did not want to go. Yet, when I got there, I found out that the new place had charms of its own. By moving a lot, you get used to looking for the good in a new city or town. And by looking for the good, you find it.
That’s a lot better than just moping and wishing you were someplace else.
3. You will find good friends in the new place.
Throughout life’s changes, you need to make new friends. Even if you stay in one place, changes such as getting married, having children, or taking a new job, often mean you lose track of some friends and you make new friends. It’s the same when you move to a new area. You will make new friends - just give it time.
4. Keep in touch with old friends.
Even though you will make new friends, it is important to keep in touch with some old friends. My biggest regrets in life have been some friends that I just lost touch with. And often my best friends are those that have remained friends through move after move.
Especially now, with email, cell phones, and all the other ways to communicate, there really is no reason for losing touch with your best old friends.
5. Keep a positive attitude.
Life is what you make of it. If you get upset and look on the negative side whenever something changes, you will be missing out on a lot. Look for the positive, and you will find it.
