Here is a checklist for items to do when you move:
1. Have you contacted the utility companies for your new house?
2. Have you arranged to shut off the utilities at your old house, or transfer them to the new owner?
3. Have you sent in a change of address to your bank, cell phone company, and any other companies that send you bills?
4. Do you have newspaper delivery, maid service, or other services that you should cancel?
5. Have you arranged to have your mail forwarded?
6. Have you turned down the furnace and shut off all the lights?
7. Have informed any tax or local authorities of your move so that they can adjust your final bill and have it forwarded to your house?
8. Is everything packed, removed, thrown out or accounted for?
9. If you are leaving furniture, have you checked that there’s nothing in, underneath, behind or on top of it?
10. Have you completed all cleaning and repairs so that you will get your security depost back (if you had one?)
11. Is everything packed and clearly marked?
12. Have you paid, or do you have the means to pay for your new house, if required?
13. Have you clearly explained or written down any repairs needed at your old house, for the new owners?
14. Have you left any manuals that you don’t need, for appliances or items you’re leaving behind?
15. Have you changed the address on things like your driver’s license, passport, etc. to your new address?
Once you’ve taken care of everything on the list, you can move on to your new house knowing that you’re able to continue your life without fear of disruption, identity theft or needing to contact the new occupants of the house with your problems. You’ll also be able to relax and enjoy the move itself.
